When in doubt, ask yourself this question

There is one question that I ask myself whenever I want gain deeper insight in to my being. It helps me to increase clarity as it points towards my otherwise unconscious motives.

Here it comes:

‘Am I doing / wanting this out of love for myself or out of a sense of lack?’
Or alternatively;

‘Am I doing this because I want to fix myself or because I want to know myself, celebrate myself and / or express myself?’

The ‘this’ in the question can be anything: decisions regarding food, people in your life, activities, cosmetic procedures & spiritual practice.

  • You can eat ice cream trying to fill an eternal void or because you are full of love for life and want to celebrate the day. Like a mother gifting her child.

  • You can go to the gym because you desperately want to fit the conditioned image of a beautiful body or because you want to take holistic care of your body. Like a mother caring for her child.

  • You can have sex to fulfill your need for validation or you can have sex to celebrate your connection, your aliveness and yourself as a sensual being. Like a mother… ok no- lets not use this example here ;-)

I like using this example though, because it can be helpful when trying to answer the question: does it come from your small self (the child) that has a limited perspective, or from your higher self (the mother) that has a wider perspective and unconditional love for the child.

There is no right or wrong answer to the question. Surely, we are probably in a healthier state when we navigate our lives from a place of self-love. But, even if the answer is that it is coming from a place of lack, simply be curious about where that sense of lack is coming from.

Remember, your desires - whether coming from lack or fullness - are guides on your journey towards experiencing a greater sense of wholeness.
